Blacksburg - Oct. 6-12 has been designated as National Fire Prevention Week and provides a good time for fanners, as well as homeowners, to focus special attention on stopping fires before they start.
Several disastrous fires in Virginia have been caused by grain producers using improperly installed equpuipment.
Two major causes of fires in grain driers are improper connection of the drier to the gas supply and malfunctioning of the solenoid valve.
Hie supply line should be connected to the drier with a flexible hose, marked “approved for LP gas service”. A rigid pipe connected to a drier may break at the connection due to vibration.
Hie solenoid valve may not close properly and allow gas to escape when the fan is stopped. A shut-off valve ahead of the solenoid in the supply line should be turned off before the fan is stopped to prevent gas fiom leaking and burning within the drier.
