were responsible for planting 325,100 seedlings.

Farmers and other individual landowners planted a total of 17,894,430 seedlings during the past year. Of this amount, 7,375,000 were received free or on a matching basis from forest industry.

Additionally, governmental plantings totalled 1,571,860 seedlings. Of this amount, 889,500 were on federal lands, 562,960 were on state lands, and the remaining 129,400 were on county and municipal areas.

On the basis of an estimated 650 seedlings per acre, the 45.8 million trees represents the reforestation of 70,050 acres of idle agricultural land or cut-over woodlands. An additional 2,945 acres were reforested by direct seeding. Thus, the total reforestation activities for the year add up to 73,035 acres.

Landowners in every county of Virginia except Arlington were involved in this past year’s reforestation activities. In addition, some seedlings were planted in the cities of Chesapeake, Newport News, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach. Buckingham, for the fourth consecutive year, was the leading tree planting county. Its total was 2,477,717. Spotsylvania, with 2,357,050, rose one-notch to 2nd place. In third placiU'wus Amelia, with 1,94 2,1 67; followed by Chesterfield, with 1,893,100; and Brunswick, with 1,805,135. Others in the top ten were King & ^ueen, 1,665,700; Surry, 1,595,500; Dinwiddie, 1,555,100; Appomattox, 1,444,727; and Louisa, 1,439,500 Four other xaunties - King William, Halifax, Charlotte and Hanover - were :redited with more than one million seedlings each. Most of the seedlings. 34 million, were grown by the Virginia Division of Forestry nursery at Providence Forge. The Continental Can Company nursery near Chester produced 8 ?million for planting in Virginia,
