present scenic splendor. John Ford directed the film “Donovan’s ReeF’ on the rim of this canyon. During this tour we saw the “Spouting Horn” and the Old Russian Fort.
Also on this tour our Hawaiian driver told us about Nuhau, an isle that is privately owned and any visitor has to be invited by its owner. The details would be too long to tell here; however, this isle belongs to the Robinson family who live there. Once a week a boat brings provisions. Two hundred and fifty native Hawaiians live a most strict life there. This is another story in its own so I’ll continue on with our tour.
The next morning, Sept. 13, we were transferred by motor coach to the pier on Wailua River where we took a cruise up the river to the “Fern Grott”. The Giant Ferns grow upside down. 1 thought of Luray Caverns. Up from the cave a beautiful female voice and a male voice sang the Hawaiian Wedding Song to us below. It was really lovely. We cruised back where we had lunch at the Coco Palms Hotel. This was a heavenly spot, in a grove of cocoanut palms. A lagoon filled with fish and lovely blooming water lilies ran right along by us as we ate a delightful lunch.
Then we were taken for our flight to Honolulu on the Island of Oahu where we were transferred to the Hilton Hotel on Waikiki Beach for a five day stay.
