Sunday, November 17, will be a big day in Culpeper telephone history. A modern new communications system will be placed into operation by the Chesapeake and Potomac Telphone Company of Virginia.

With the advent of the new center in Culpeper and the extensive additional facilities in Criglersville, Madison and Sperryville, C&P will bring a variety of services to customers in these exchanges. According to C&P manager F. Wayne Dementi, the center in Culpeper is the hub and will provide information service, operator handled calls and repair service for all areas involved. However, all the communities will have their own dial switching centers for local calling.

One of the big things C&P customers in the exchanges involved will be able to do is to dial their own station-to-station long distance phone calls by using direct distance dialing (DDD). Culpeper will serve as the switching center for all long distance calllling for the other nearby communities. Calls will be routed through the new center’s equipment and transmitted throughout the state and nation to distant cities.
