Ladders are handy for painting and doing many necessary chores around the house, but they can be dangerous.
The American Insurance Association cautions that a fall from a ladder can cripple or even kill. In 1966, for example - the latest year such figures are available - falls in homes across the country claimed 11,800 lives, the highest toll of all types of home accidents.
When in use, a ladder should be placed at a safe angle, or, better still, have someone hold it so it won’t slip, the Association advises.
