Social Security
More than 175,000 children will benefit from recent changes in the social security law. It changes the conditions for determining dependency upon a working mother.
Before this change, for a child to be considered dependent upon his mother and eligible for monthly social security payments when she died, retired, or became disabled, the mother needed to have worked under social security for at least Vh years out of the last three years, unless she was actually supporting the child.
Hie change eliminated this recent-work requirement. Beginning with February 1968, monthly benefits are payable to the child of a woman worker who has died, retired, or become entitled to social security disability benefits if she has worked enough to be “fully insured” whether or not she has done any recent work under social security.
