We went through the Maritime Museum, the first such on the west coast. Hie Museum boasts of one of the finest ship model collections in the U.S.
Ghiradelli Square at one time was a chocolate factory but is now converted into a chic showcase for shops and restaurants. Our stay here and lunch was bringing my last day in San Francisco to a close.
On Saturday a.m., Mrs. Dredge, the Australian lady and I checked out of the El Cortez. Mr. X was still amused over the manner in which 1 took San Francisco. He said, “Miss Almond wanted to see a little of San Francisco and she did.”
A taxi took us to the Jack Tar Hotel and we got on Parlor Car No. 50 for what proved to be the most beautiful, instructive, and exciting lengthy drive one could ever have anywhere.
John Mills was our driver. Each person was asked to tell his or her living place. An Australian family was on and they lived within 10 miles of Mrs. Dredge but never met until then. There were people from Israel, Puerto Rico, Canada, Holland, Texas, Ohio, New York and I was still the only Virginian. There were three sets of sisters.
We left San Francisco by way of Oakland Bay Bridge, a double deck bridge. I left a little portion of my heart in San Francisco. It is not only a beautiful city, but the people are most hospitable. They go out of their way to give assistance if it is needed.
The morning’s travel took us mainly through the agricultural area which was interesting to me. Dams and aqueducts furnished a good bit of the water. Stock was grazing on what I thought dried grass. Later I learned this was not grass but wild oats. They turn brown in summer. This is good for grazing I was told. We saw fruit trees, nut trees, and olive trees. We stopped at Fjord’s Smorgette for lunch and what a lunch! After lunch John told us we would have to transfer to a Yosemite Park bus because no other bus was allowed in the Park. He said he would meet us in Fresno Monday morning to leave at 9 a.m. When we got on the Yosemite bus I wondered about the glass windows in the top of the bus. As we entered the Park, I learned that we were not. only surrounded by beauty but We could see from the top the
