As you stated in your paper o January 9. "Rumblings am grumblings and rumors abou’ unfair tax assessments are heart in all sections of the county.” Tc a certain extent you are correct but you forgot to mention the names and assessments of all the homeowners in Rappahannock, i just happened to notice my name listed in the last issue of the News along with my Tax Assessment In the first place, I had nc knowledge of my assessment anc certainly did not expect to fine out in this manner. 1 was nol consulted before this wa published and I doubt very seriously if any of the othei people listed were so contacted. I personally call this an invasior upon ones privacy and a very unneighborly thing to do.
It seems that the freedom ol the press is being pinpointed here Article IV of the “Bill of Rights” once stated that the individua was |^ee from violations of the security in areas of house effects....and papers. If this is so then how is it possible for the members of your newspaper stafl to sidetract these rights anc publicize the personal wealth ol one, such as, in a tax assessment This is an invasion of privacy which is unlawful, unless tht person in question is asked if ht or she wills it: thp right of t newspaper to publish private records. If one has a dispute with the Assessment Office, take it up with them and if you are then nol satisfied, contact highei iuthority. Since the paper is so interestec in exploring the upsets of people hen maybe they shoulc nvestigate this matter. I, anc other people, feel that it wouic be very unwise for the press noi to do so.
