[ Commissioner, Virginia State ! Health Department today. [ The Richmond Maternity anc ’ Infant Care Project Number 55J has provided family planninj assistance for 56 percent of th< women in the city’s low-income areas, which compares to ar average of only 17 percent for the 100 other areas surveyed in th< United States. The project ha been in operation since March 6 1967 and is the only one ir Virginia. It is one of 60 sue! projects administered by Federal State and Local funds.
The Federal grants are given tc certain core urban communitiei which have a high concentratior of low socio-economic populatior 1 and incidence of maternal anc 1 infant sickness and mortality.
The project’s four-year goal ii to lower Richmond’s infam mortality rate by 10 percent eacl ' year. To do this the projec operates three neighborhooc centers and four satellite center located in various low-incom< areas df the city. Two mobile Maternity and Infant Care unit have been purchased anc outfitted and will be in operatioi soon.
In general, the Richmonc Maternity and Infant Care Projeci offers instruction in: Healtt Education, Counselling of Unwec Teen-Age Mothers, Nutrition anc Family Planning. Since beginninf operation the project has hac 12,§90 total visits to its Familj Planning clinics. In addition, the project offer maternal and infant services tc the people of Richmond Citj never available before.
