Canning Peaches
BLACKSBURG-Horticulturists at Virginia Tech are releasing two new varieties of clingstone peaches for canning. They have been named Piedmontgold and Mountaingold and were developed by Dr. George D. Oberle and C. B. Wood of the Research Division.
A revival of interest in commercial canning of peaches in the southeastern U.S. and the need for varieties with superior canning characteristics prompted the release of these two varieties, said Oberle. Tiie new peaches originated in 1951 in crosses made by Dr. L. F. Hough of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. Hie parentage includes J. H. Hale and Goldfinch ancestry.
