There is more to the art of pottery-making than forming clay and firing it, Miss Jordan explained. The developing and mixing of the clays and glazes is as important as the actual working on the pots. Some potters dig and refine their own clay. Today most potters buy their clay in the dry form and by mixing different types of clay: can compose a clay body of the desired consistency.
Clays range from coarse to smooth in consistency and from light buff to black in color. UWF students will be sent out of clay digging expeditions later this quarter near the campus’ old fish camp. The clay found on campus is light buff in color.
Before it can be shaped, the clay must be “wedged” to get rid of lumps and air bubbles. This process is similar to kneading dough.
