Alter wedging, the clay is formed by hand building or throwing on the wheel. Finishing techniques, such as trimming the foot, decorating or adding handles, are done when the pot is in a leather hard state.

When the piece has dried it is bisque fired to about 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. After this first firing the clay is hard, but still absorbent enough to hold a glaze. After glazing the pottery is refired at 2,200-2,300 F. This process takes frfrom 24 hours to three days. When it cools a finished product emerges. What are the advantages of working with clay? Its plastic qualities lend to a variety of techniques, pinching, coiling, slabbing and throwing. Clay can be built up or carved away and can be worked in a soft or hard state. “It is an inexpensive material,” said Miss Jordan. “The value coming from what you do with it.” It might well be called an earthy profession.
