Now is the time to plant corn, spray for thistles and check for Alfalfa weevil.
According to the signs, corn planting time is here. Jenkins Mountain has greened up all the way to the top; dogwoods are in full bloom, white oak leaves are bigger than a squirrels ear and the call of the whip-poor-wil is heard throughout the hollows.
Most experts, seed dealers and local agronomist agree that sometime between April 21st and May 10th is the time to plant com in Rappahannock. Planting too early often results in poor stands and excessive flea bettle damage. Plant too late and yields are reduced, stalks grow taller and there is more danger of lodging.
The real art and science of corn production in this area lies in the farmers’ ability to adjust his rate of planting and fertilization to his soil type. Selecting a variety that will yield well under these conditions and then following through with a good weed control program. Why not talk over your corn planting plans with us.
Thistles are in a prime stage for spraying right now. A couple of weeks from now it will be too late for best results or effective control.
Please remember to reduce drift and the danger of injurying your neighbor’s orchard, garden or ornamentals by spraying when:
1. Wind is 5 mph or less.
2. With pressure of 20-30 psi.
3. With proper nozzle tip (8003 or larger or equivalent)
