Engrossing and calligraphy are fast becoming professions of the past as the tempo of today’s already hurried existence accelerates. Engrossing is the art of copying legal or other documents in impressive and ornamental hand lettering or script while calligraphy is the art of penmanship. Few engrossers or calligraphers remain in the business and even few schools remain which train or teach the profession.
Richard W. Pierson of! Amissville is among the sparse number of engrossers of a recent generation. He is only 29 years of; age; studied and worked for Five years at the Zanerian College of Penmanship in Columbus, Ohio and while there handled all of the correspondence lessons for the school. He holds four teaching certificates in calligraphy.
Mr. Pierson is self-employed and, all of his work is done in his studio at his home here. Among special work done by an engrosser are tributes, memorials, resolutions, invitations, certificates, diplomas and testimonials. Mr. Pierson wrote the official invitation to the inauguration of President Richard Nixon in January. From his original invitation in handwritten script, the engraving plate was made and thousands of envitations engraved from it.
His most recent work, done just this week, is a tribute in memory of the late General Dwight D. Eisenhower which will be presented Mrs. Eisenhower in the very near future by the Republican National Committee.
