rhis engrossment is a four-page album on off-white paper done in black Old English Text, embellished with color illumination and pure gold.

There are many forms and styles of engrossing and calligraphy in bold shades and delicate hairlines. All are done by hand with a simple pen. In script the nib of the pen is spread by pressure on the down stroke to produce a bold line and a fine line is made with a light upward stroke. In text or hand lettering a broadpoint pen is used. A special pen has been developed with the point anchored^ to one side to avoid hand cramping.

Some engrossing is rather plain though it can be very intricate and flourishing with color lavished if desired. Costs of the work depends on the several factors, including quality of paper, and intricacy of style and type lettering. Business is \ sometimes seasonal for in the early summer graduation diplomas are in demand while at Christmas the card business is expanded. Mr. Pierson designs greeting and business cards, monograms, brochures, etc. Much of this work is secured in the metropolitan area but he is attempting to develope a local line also, particularly writing names on diplomas which have been printed or engraved earlier.

Mr. Pierson worked on a farm until he began his study of penmanship which had been a challenge for a long time. He moved with his wife from Ohio t'o
