Arts, Crafts Exhibit
The accomplishments of the Arts and Crafts group of Rappahannock were exhibited Saturday at Cab Inn, Sperryville and included knitting, quilting, embroidery, weaving, painting, carving, Decoupage, etc. A luncheon served in connection with the exhibit was attended by about 40 persons.
On display were more than 150 pieces of Decoupage, numerous pieces of cooking crystals and resin casting. Hand painted lamp shades were shown as well as country tin and folk art (painting on wood). Many and varied assortments of handwork and needlework, and a display of bookbinding done locally by R. E. Thompsen.
The Arts and Crafts Group is stimulating interest in old crafts and exploring new mediums Several people who have participated in classes sponsored by the Arts and Crafts group have become quite professional and are making careers of their accomplishments.
Courses in basic knitting ot five, two-hour sessions have been sponsored by the Arts and Crafts group since 1965. Eleven classes have been given with a total of 90 receiving instructions. They came from Amissville, Castleton, Boston, Flint Hill, Hume, Huntly, Sperryville, Washington and Woodville. (Chester Gap held its own course.) Certificates for satisfactory completion of the course have been awarded 69 and ten additional certificates were given that number who completed the course twice.
The method used in teaching the classes was developed by Mrs. Mary Cleveriey, the instructor. ' Lesson sheets and certificate! were done by Mias Ruby Jenkim 1 at the Extension Office. Then 1 has never been any charge for th< lessons, nor for any* service giver
