mail and telephone surveys of dove hunters and intensive banding efforts. All eastern states and the federal government are cooperating in the study which will be the most thorough ever attempted on a migratory species. Data accumulated so far indicates that there are some 200,000,000 doves in the eastern management unit of which hunters take some 20,000,000 each fall. Virginia’s share amounts to around a million birds during the state’s traditional split season. The data thus far accumulated indicates that only 20 percent of the eastern hunters managed to get their daily limit of 12. Thus, although the bag limit will go up 50%, only 20% of the hunters have the potential to take that many doves.
