One survey technique involving counts of calling doves made early this summer shows dove numbers down in Virginia and other eastern states where they are hunted while data from other survey methods such as wing studies, hunter harvest figures and band returns indicate that dove population is up over last year. Data accumulated during the higher bag limit years should allow researchers to eliminate discrepancies of this sort and put dove management on a scientific basis. It is anticipated that the increased bag limit will remain in effect for at least 2 years possibly followed by a restricted bag limit for comparison.
