You know, here in Rappahannock we might not have many of the whitewashed fences, elaborate show barn type of purebred beef cattle operations, but we do have some down to earth, practical breeders who are making a genuine contribution to the beef industry and a name for Rappahannock cattle. Five of these cattlemen have young bulls that have passed the rigid weight for age and grade requirements to enter the B.C.I.A. bull feeding tests at Culpeper and Dublin. These men, Ned Johnson, Alvin Stokes, Alphaeus Cannon, Randall Updike and Ray Cannon have a total of 25 bulls entered in this testing program. These bulls, along with the other 154 on test, will be offered for sale next March.
Ray Cannon set some kind of record this past spring by having the top selling bull in both the Culpeper and Dublin B.C.I.A. sales. Both of these bulls were sired by Kingdom Elevate 223. The Dublin bull sold for $3,500 fpr two-thirds interest., Ray’s top selling bull at Culpeper went for $3,000 and his five bulls- sold through these two performance sales averaged $2,335 per head.
Ray Cannon will have eight heifers, seven sired by the old Kingdom Elevate bull, selling in the Virginia B.C.I.A. performance calf sale at Verona, 5 miles north pf Staunton, October 14 at 7 p.m. If you are in the market for some top performing replacement heifers this could be your opportunity.
