Hunters were favored by good weather when the ’69-70 general season opened this past Monday. This good weather the opening day and also the second day was possibly the prime factor in the success of Rappahannock deer hunters. Thirty one deer were checked from Rappahannock County on the first day and 2 others from Warren were checked here. Twenty more bucks were brought in on Tuesday and 2 early Wednesday morning. Coupled with the one deer killed during the archery season, a buck taken by William Cameron, Jr., Rappahannock’s kill stands at 54. This figure is well over half of the ’68-69 total and more than the 40 some deer checked in all of ’67-68.
No bear have been checked in Rappahannock. Bear hunters in Madison are having good success.
The greatest hunting pressure so far has been on deer and there are few reports on small game. Two parties of rabbit hunters I talked with claim they are having trouble finding cottontails. Quail hunters should have a good year. Bobwhite seems to be everywhere. I’ve checked no grouse hunters but deer hunters report jumping old Ruff in pretty good numbers.
