A salamander scurried between layers of the tree’s rotting bark. This was one of the many scenes observed recently by teachers participating in an “Environmental Studies Workshop,” held in the Shenandoah National Park.
In offering these facilities for use by six surrounding school divisions, the park service is assisting teachers in using their environment to make class studies more relevant. During the workshop, on October 31, Park Naturalists demonstrated that concepts in math, science, history, government, geography, economics, and art, could easily be taught to students who would have the opportunity of visiting selected areas of the park.
Through the use of two field trips along park trails and films shown, teachers were exposed to new instructional possibilities. The Fall foliage, variety of colors afid scenery were suggested for use in art classes. Fungi, mosses, and unique rock forms were
