Calving time will be here before you know it. In fact quite a few calves are already on the ground. Cow-calf producers should be planning ahead to assure a high calving percent of healthy, growthy calves.
In larger herds, I think it will pay big dividends to separate your cow herd into three groups as the calving season progresses. Many of our county cattlemen are using this system or some sort of variation of it.
Sort out cows as they are about ready to calf and move into a clean, well-drained field that is convenient to check regularly. This, of course, makes it easier to keep a close eye on cows that are about to calve and keeping cows and calves out of a muddy filthy barn lot is the best calf scours and pneumonia medicine I know.
After the cows have calved and the young ’uns are doing a good job of utilizing the available milk supply, move them into another field where the cow feed can be increased. This system makes it much simpler to keep a watchful eye on the whole herd and to feed the cows according to their needs.
Say! - don’t forget to spray your cows for lice before the cold weather sets in.
