pointed to as possible science studies. An abandoned mountain farm, spring house, root cellar, and stone fence were viewed as an incentive for students to study area communities as they existed in the past. Old mountain-top apple orchards and timber harvests were shown as possible economic studies. Valley communities which could be seen from the park were suggested as inducements to study local geography. The institution of the Park itself and its development during the 1930’s was said to be a good study in government operations. Elevations and geometric forms in nature were suggested as possible studies in mathematics.
A central theme conveyed throughout the workshop involved man’s waste and pollution of his natural habitat. Park Naturalists mentioned that this trend is accelerating. A basic ingredient to life, air, was mentioned as diminishing in supply as mankind constructs new cities on 3000 acres of land in this nation each day. Park Naturalists said that unless we place our relationship to our environment in proper perspective, man’s continued existence may be in doubt.
It is anticipated by both Public School and Park officials that increased use of the Shenandoah National Park by teachers and students will occur as a result of these “Environmental Studies Workshops’’ that have been conducted in recent weeks.
