William Elvans Haines, 46, of Newport News was fatally injured in a single-car crash which occurred Friday morning in Rappahannock County. He was enroute to visit his mother in Luray when he crashed on Route 622 at Fletcher’s Mill near Sperryville. Haines was operating a 1969 Buick when he ran off the right shoulder of the highway, veered back into the road, then off again and struck a cement bridge abutment. The car went over the bank and into the stream. Haines was thrown out, according to Trooper J. B. Willis, who investgated, and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Dr. R. L. Cassidy.
Miss Ellen Elizabeth Mustoe was not injured when she struck and killed a deer last Thursday evening on Route 606, the Fodderstack Road. Damage to her car, a 1966 Mustang, was estimated at $50.
Friday night a single-car crash occurred at the intersection of Routes 522 and 231. Charles Edward McDaniels of Washington, D. C. traveling north
on Route 231, skidded through the stop sign and crashed into the stone wall on the Miller property. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at a thousand dollars. McDaniels was charged with reckless driving.
