Well, another meeting of the retirees has come and gone. That means another year has been added to our lives. It was a bit sad when we bowed our heads in memory of those for whom ‘the golden bells had rung’. One of my old friends said, “Si, I’ll see you next year - if I am still alive.” I hope he makes it; I hope I will be there for him to see. It was a pleasant day. We, my wife and I, went with friends. I guess it is only natural that fellows from the same alma mater have a certain rapport, but as a group we were all brothers. Oh yes, the person mentioned last year, who had passed his four score years, was with us. It was a pleasure to see him again. It is my sincere hope that we will be able to enjoy these meetings for years, if it is in accord with The Divine Will.
Our pastor read from The Book that three score and ten was the natural span of a man’s life, that if he lived beyond that he was living on borrowed time. Borrowed from whom or where? My people are long lived. It has been predicted that I will live into the nineties, or that I will live to be ninety-two. Assuming that such a prediction were true, I would live twenty-two years on borrowed time. Now, here is the way I reason the matter - if I borrow time I borrow it from my own soul’s manifestation here on this plane. Maybe in my last incarnation I only lived to be forty-eight - or maybe in my next the scales will be balanced. I’ll tell you a secret, I will leave it to HIM who knows what is best. Like Whittier in his Eternal Goodness,“--beside
the Silent Sea
I wait the muffled oar;
No harm from Him can come to me
On ocean or on shore
And Thou, O Lord! by whom are seen
Thy creatures as they be,
Forgive me if too close I lean
My human heart to Thee.”
