I once had a pastor who used the word ‘vicarious’ frequently, usually in reference to Christ’s suffering for the sins of mankind. Have you ever read a story and became involved to the extent you enjoyed the pleasures of the characters, also suffered with them when they suffered? My wife and I used to go to ‘tear jerker’ movies. She would use all the tissues she brought and then borrow my handkerchief, when it became soaked she would wring it out and start all over. Well, that’s vicariousness.
And vicariousness is a form of substitution. I’ve known of wives that gave all of themselves to the newborn babe, of husbands that turned to another because affection was denied them at home. There are wives who give their love to a cat or dog, husbands who take up golf or some other sport to occupy their time.
