Retirement Benefit?
Are you getting ready to retire? Mrs. Hazel F. Crumpton, social security manager in Winchester, has some tips that may help save you time and trouble when you apply for your social security benefits.
A telephone call to the social security office is a good first step. Someone there can answer your questions and tell you how to apply and when to do it. Their telephone number is 667-1511.
When you apply, bring your social security card or a record of your social security number, proof of your age, and your last year’s income tax withholding statement. (If you are self-employed, bring a copy of last year’s income tax return and evidence of payment of the self-employment contribution.)
If your wife also is apply for benefits, she should bring evidence of her age and her social security card or a record of her number if she has one.
The best evidence of your age is a birth or baptismal certificate made within 5 years of your birth. However, if these are not available, other documents may be used. Generally, the older the document the better, s If you have children unde 18--or youngsters between 18 and 22 who are full-time students--bring their birth certificates and records of their social security number.
If you have a child who was severely disabled before age 18 ; and who continues to be disabled, you should also bring medical evidence of the child’s disability and any other pertinent facts about his disability, i It’s generally a good idea to
