With unbelieveably good weather overhead and a not-toosoggy course, the twenty second running of the Rappahannock Hunt Point-to-Point Races was enjoyed by an estimated crowd of four thousand. For the first time in many years, the weather was spring-like and the sun beamed down on the first Saturday in March. Randy Rouse of the Fairfax Hunt took the feature race, The Ben Venue, on his hunter Buen Paisano after Harry Semmes Jr. on Sun Castle was disqualified for cutting a flag. Sun Castle had the race well in hand as he took the final jump and raced down the home stretch only to be disqualified by the judges. Rouse won the Ben Venue last year also with this horse. David Semmes' August Acorn was awarded second place and in third was Victory Peak with Archibald Kingsley up. The Mount Salem race for ladies was captured by Mrs. George Strawbridge Jr. on Sow-em. She took the race over the favored Jaycee Queen which won at Casanova the previous week. In third place was Prince Rock. The three-mile Mount Marshall race was won by Willie McCormick on Rock Springs owned by Mrs. R. Toerge of the Orange County Hunt. Marvelous Melvin came in second and Blood Shot was third.
