Eighty-four performance tested beef bulls will be sold to the highest bidders this Friday, March 12, 10 a.m. at the Culpeper Enterprises’ 13th Annual Bull Sale. Fifty-four Angus, 25 Herefords and two Charolais will be sold. These bulls are the survivors of a rigid testing program. More than twenty bulls of the original 114 did not surpass the rigid standards and will not sell.
Twenty-three bulls weighed 1000 pounds or more at 365 days of age. And records on preweaning performance, 140 day feed test, and lifetime performance, are available on each bull.
The top performing bull this year belongs to Dr. A. V. Bartenslager, Churchville, Virginia. Dr. Bartenslaser’s Lot 24 Angus bull, a son of Bowsell of Wye, has an adjusted 365 day weight of 1,136 pounds and gained 3.97 pounds per day on the 140 day feed test.
C. E. Johnson, Jr. Sperryville raised the second highest gaining bull of all breeds on the 140 day feed test. Sired by Piccard of Wye, this Angus bull gained 3.64 pounds per day on feed test.
Ray Cannon, Castleton, is the owner of the second heaviest Angus bull at 365 days of age. El Rancho Grande Bandolier 2 weighed in at 1062 at one year of age.
Miss Donna Cannon, Castleton; Admiral Josef Gardiner, Flint Hill; and H. L. Manwaring, Woodville, have bulls consigned to this sale that have met the rigid standards. Several practical commercial cattlemen have told me that this is one of the better groups of bulls to go ‘through this testing program. If you are in the market for a herd bull, suggest you arrive early, get out in the bull pens and look them over thoroughly before the sale starts. Select the type of bulls that will bring about the needed change in our cow herds. Most of our Rappahannock cows have ample type and muscle. But we still need to type of bull that will stretch our calves up and out, and pass on the genes for growth and size.
