Selective Service
As a part of a nationwide per sonnel cut back and restructuring ordered by National Selectivt Service Headquarters, various changes will be put into effect ir Virginia’s Selective Servict operation as early as April 15 1971. The entire program oi changes are scheduled to b€ completed by June 30, 1971.
Future operations of Selective Service are being geared tc support President Nixon’s policy of an all-volunteer armec force with the conscription apparatus prepared to respond in the event of a national emergency il the President so directs. Many Virginia local boards will be collocated. At the present time 129 local boards in the state are at 109 sites. Under the new plan the same number of local boards will be at 37 sites. This has the advantage of increasing the number of hours collocated boards will be open to the public. The collocation of local boards will eliminate some jobs, but will result in increased efficiency paired with an over-all cost saving to the taxpayer.
