PRODUCE PROFITABLE AP PLES
-The above statement is neither original nor profound but at this season of the year is more true than fruit growers would like to admit. When small and poorly colored apples show up in the bins, statements similar to New Year’s Resolutions are often forthcoming. These statements are legionary and are similar to the following: “I am going to remove that block this winter;” “We will do a more thorough job of pruning”; “These trees must be topped to let the light in”; and so on the statements go, but to what avail? For one reason or another we renege, the block is left to bear one more crop (of apples that during the last three years have cost the profit from other blocks.) The weather was so cold in January and February we could not prune (but what about those beautiful day in November and December when spring seemed a> long way off). For a while put yourself in the position of the buyer to whom you sell. You, the buyer, are pleased with what you are getting, and it is moving well. Then comes a request to use a few boxes of some odd variety or size. In an effort to be accommodating you say send them on; they foul up the warehousing, retailing, etc. and the homemaker becomes unhappy. She stops buying apples and all apple movement slows down! If they are processed, they may not blend well, or cause other disruption of the operation. The volume that was accommodated was small in individual cases, but multiplied by many sellers, became more than the system could stand.
