Deaths Decline
An encouraging decrease of 45 Virginia traffic deaths for the first three quarters of the year, when compared with the same period of 1970, was reported today by Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police. Colonel Burgess said the first nine months of 1970 saw 925 deaths while those of this year numbered 880. Pedestrian deaths were down from 168 to 148 and those of servicemen form 64 to 57.
“This substantial decrease is all the more encouraging when we consider that it was achieved in the face of a rise in traffic volumes of about 5.8 percent and a substantial 1970 reduction,” he said.
He observed that on April 9 deaths were 40 below those for the same period of 1970 but on May 14 they were five above. Since May 22, they have remained below.
