This artifice, when the hiker is supposedly wandering the wilds, creeps in, threatening the investor of European boots, intricate pack, and freezedried foods, with a feeling of fatalistic foolishness.
But, if the wildlife has slipped away, the topography is there. After two or three days of climbing, sleeping uncovered but comfortable in a winter wind, and simply walking, the hiker rediscovers the obvious.
