orite rocky ridge. Already there were hikers coming up. But these were mostly day hikers who would rock climb, perhaps have lunch at the Byrd’s Nest shelter and then circle by the way of a saddle trail back to their cars by Weakley Hollow Fire Road.
Around noon we left Byrd’s Nest Number One, went down the saddle trail ' to Old Rag Shelter, and then departed from the hikers by following Old Rag Fire Road around Robertson Mountain.
We wouldn’t see anyone until that evening.
The fire road is a long steady climb. Generally, the smaller the trail, the more interesting and thus less fatiguing the hike. The wide fire road was fatiguing, but was an opportunity to get into a rhythm, going directly away from Old Rag toward Skyline Drive.
