Social security generally follows State law in determining if a common-law wife or husband or illegitimate children are eligible for monthly benefits.

“Dependents’ benefits can be particularly important for a retarded child,” Mrs. Crumpton said. “If the condition began before age 18, a severely retarded son or daughter can get monthly checks as long as he or she is too disabled to work.”
