Several Supervisors took turns asking questions of both Horton and Warden Bruce. Said Bruce to Mrs. Betty S. Coates: “I thought it was definitely a bear. No dog can pull a leg off a sheep without it’s being dragged. The entire front leg — the shoulder blade was even pulled off the body. He admitted to me at the time he thought it was a bear, too.’’
Added Bruce: “Mr. Manwaring and Mrs. Jenkins saw a bear in the neighborhood about the same time it happened, the 23rd of May.”
Horton disagreed with Bruce’s description: “It just pulled the skin back. . I didn’t see no shoulder blade.”
BRUCE WAS just as insistent that the “leg had been pulled off.”
