MORE AND MORE FARMERS are shifting to fall and early winter fertilization of cool season pastures. Practical experience and research combine to give the go-ahead on this practice. In fact, V.P.I. agronomists say that fall, winter or early spring is the best time to fertilize pastures and anytime during the year is the best time to apply lime.
Research results are proving that considerably more root growth takes place during the relative warm periods that often occur during the early winter and early spring than previously believed. Grasses that have received the proper plant nutrients can take full advantage of this early root growth and are in a healthier condition to kick-off and compete in the spring.
