“IF YOU want $2,000 instead of $1,500, why not ask for it?” insisted Newbill Miller. “Why not work out a two-year budget?”
Commonwealth’s Attorney George Davis then suggested that the Board draft a resolution stating a condition as to the maximum amount the Board was willing to spend each year in the regional program. Mr. Hargett wasn’t sure that this would be acceptable by the federal program which makes matching funds available.
“Then if they won’t accept it on that basis, you can tell them to forget it,” said Davis.
“I think it’s great and it’s something we need.. .’’began Mrs. Betty Coates.
“Nobody disagrees,” said Miller.
Mayor Andrew Kozik of Washington spoke from the audience: “Things like the Cancer Crusade have a budget and a program. I would have assumed that you could estimate ... what your costs will be.”
Col. E. P. Luke wondered what services were offered in the regional program. Such things as drug information centers, day care for mentally retarded children, help in establishing sheltered workshops, aid for the aged, temporary foster care, &c., he was told.
Mrs. Coates finally moved to join the regional program, “and limit our liability to $1,500 for a twoyear period.” The vote was unanimous.
