The amount and kind of fertilizer to apply should be based on carefully taken soil samples. The percent desirable grass and clover, soil type and past fertilization practices should be taken into consideration. Usually pastures that have a high percentage of desirable grasses and are located on good productive soil can afford a higher rate of fertilization. Productive pasture, like any other crop, gives the highest return for the fertilizer dollar invested.
Generally, tall grass and ladino-clover pastures should be top-dressed each year with 0-50 pounds of nitrogen (depending on percent of clover, etc.) and ' 40-100 pounds each of P2 05 and K20 per acre.
Bluegrass and white clover can usually be maintained by top-dressing every three or four years with 100-150 pounds of P2 05 and 80-150 pounds of K20 per acre. Superphosphate will do the job in some instances. Nitrogen should be applied as needed.
Don’t guess — TEST. Take soil samples now. And help me to do a better job of helping you by giving me enough information to make a worth while fertilizer recommendation.
Congratulations to Tommy and Louise Eastham on receiving the Outstanding County Conservation Award. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer couple. And certainly the pastures are becoming greener every year around Ben Venue and the Rucker Farm.
