the cookie jar so my lady says just sit down while I boil the coffee. But wouldn’t you know just then at 10:15 the electric went off.
However, we were always ready for an emergency. 1 filled the old iron kettle hanging on the fireplace crane, stirred up the fire a bit and allowed as how we had that electric licked with an ol’ timey coffee party. Don’t forget, all the while that wind did everything but shuck the bark off the trees. Just as I started to hang the kettle in the fireplace the vacuum and draft in that chimney was so strong it started to suck that kettle right up the flue. That problem was easily remedied, we just closed the damper and outwitted the wind.
The party was very sociable but one of the visitors told a tale that some folks might think was exaggerated. She said she had ten hens sitting on the roost with the hen house door open. When that wind hit its peak it took all the feathers off one side, clean as a whistle.
The chickens reacting to chill air, turned around, only to lose everything but their pin feathers on that side. This neighbor said they weren’t layin’ anyway, so she called her husband and said,“Robert you might just as well chop the heads off those hens — they’re all plucked anyway.” Some people can sure tell ’em but folks it was some kind of storm.
