The crucial question arises now: why choose this particularly beautiful and historic section of Virginia to desecrate with a tangle of thick wires and high ugly towers? There are surely a number of alternatives, including existing utility corridors that unfortunately already are gouged through the land elsewhere.
As to that other assault upon our sensibilities, the American Viscose plant’s persistent poisoning of our air in the name of jobs and the sweet smell of success, that was a remarkably technical and erudite defense of the stench in the News last week sent in by Mrs. Barbara Pullen Sowers. We are of course happy to get her views, but were somewhat sorry to see her use phrases like “uninformed emotionalism” with respect to those who merely hanker to breathe fresh air instead of putrid fumes.
After all, we are human beings and not computer machines, so we do have feelings and emotions and even noses, and if we can’t have some strong feelings about air pollution what would she recommend we do get emotional about— the annual fiscal statement of the FMC Corporation?
