WINNERS of the patriotic essay contest sponsored by Ami$sville Ruritan Club have been announced. The contest, under the direction of the Citizenship and Patriotism Committee of the Ruritans, was judged in two categories. These were upper elementary grades six through eight and high school.
In the upper elementary section, Ronald Parker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Parker of Amissville, was named winner among the 39 entries, and received a prize of $10. Runners-up were ^ Jimmy Swindler of Sperryville, son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Swindler, who was awarded $5 and Fletcher King Eastham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Eastham of Washington, who was given a $2 award.
The judges who came from out of the county, were so impressed with the context and originality of these essays on the topic “Why I’m Proud to be an Amercan,” that they contributed cash for $1 awards to a number of entries. Since the judges wished to remain anonymous the club or contestants could not express appreciation though much was felt.
