PERSONS calling long distance to about half of Virginia’s telephones will need to change their dialing habits beginning June 24.
Dallas H. Reid. ' vice president and division manager of Virginia Telephone & Telegraph Company, said on that date, at 2i01 a.m., a new area code for most of the central and southeastern parts of the state will go into effect.
Reid said use of the new area code, 804, will be necessary on all direct dialed long distance calls into the 804 area.
The two area codes, 703 and 804. will be divided by a line existing from the northern Virginia area, adjacent to Washington, D.C., southwest along the Blue Ridge Mountains toward Roanoke and the southwestern portion of the state, Reid said. Washington, Va. is included in the 703 designation.
“LOCAL telephone numbers won’t change,’’ Reid said, “just the area code and that will only change for about one half of the telephoned in Virginia.”
Necessitating the change of area codes is the extensive growth of the telephone industry in Virginia, Reid said. “There are approximately 600 digit combinations available for local exchanges such as the 675 used in Washington, Va. for each area code.
