Rinse and Drain Pesticide Containers—The nagging problem of what to do with used pesticide containers is still around, but the industry has come up with a way to greatly reduce the potential hazard from material remaining in metal or glass containers once they have been emptifed. It’s a simple rinse and drain procedure employed at the time the pesticide is placed in the spray tank, thus reducing the potential for contamination of soil and water. The National Agricultural Chemicals Association suggests a procedure based on the technique used by laboratories to reduce the concentration of material in a container. After normal emptying the container should be allowed to drain in a vertical position for 30 seconds. For best results the container should be rinsed three times, allowing 30 seconds for draining after each rinse. Rinse materials should be easily measurable. Water or other diluting material being used in the spray program should be used to rinse the container. Use one quart for each rinse of a onegallon can or jug; a gallon for each five-gallon can; and five gallons for either 30 or 55 gallon drums. Drain each rinse into the spray tank before filling it to the desired level. Pesticide containers should not be reused.

Whatever the disposition to be made of used pesticide containers they pose less potential for a hazard if they have been properly rinsed and drained at the time they are emptied.

From an economical standpoint the procedure insures that the person who uses pesticides can get full benefit from his pest control dollar and protect the quality of the environment in the process.
