GAME Commission biologists confirm that the large majority of the hunter game checking stations have now reported on the Virginia gobbler harvest for the spring of 1973. Todate it appears that the reported kill will be below the 1972 harvest with a drop of 228 bearded birds from 2766 to 2538. The 8% decline was not considered to be significant.
The 1973 spring gobbler harvest was the second highest recorded since the establishment of the season thirteen years ago.
Combining the ‘73 spring harvest with the 4009 birds killed during the 1972 fall season it was determined that the sportsmen involved collected a near record 6547 wild turkeys.
Leading gobbler counties included Wythe with 118; Fauquier, 81; Bland, 80; Albemarle, 68; Rockingham, 67; v Dinwiddie, 63; Smyth, 62 and Bath, 61. □
