WHAT A BEAUTIFUL, fickle, unpredictable Spring! Summer comes to visit for a brief spell. Doors and windows are thrown open. Dogs seek out the cool bare earth in the shade of the forsythia. Then by morning a chill wind comes gusting down through Thornton Gap; house dogs are trying to slip in the kitchen door and farmers planting corn are bundled up like mid winter. In spite of the weather or maybe because of it, most farmers are ahead in their work schedule. Many cattlemen had turned out on grass by mid April. And cows and calves came through the winter in about as good shape as I have ever seen them. A high percentage of corn had been seeded by May3. The earliest seeded corn is sprouting now and most stands appear excellent. Fruit prospects, countywide, are good to date. And early vegetable gardens, after a slow start, are beginning to blossom out. For our area, grass tetany seems to be remaining a problem, later in the season than usual. If conditions warrant, suggest you keep a salt-magnesium oxide mixture before your cows until end of May. And just as a reminder—if you turned your bulls in with the cows today, your first calves would start coming about the 15th of February.
Musk and curled thistles are starting to send up their main stalks. If you have a thistle problem and are planning on spraying, better get hopping. Put if off another week or two and it will be too late for effective control.
About the only complaint, besides the weather, I have been getting from vegetable gardners is flea beetle damage. This is the black, very small flealike critter that punches a network of small holes in turnips, kale and potato leaves and makes lacework out of newly set eggplants. Sevin spray or dust will give reasonable good control.□
