VIRGINIA RESIDENTS who have reached their 65th birthday will be eligible to purchase the lifetime hunting, fishing and trapping license for $5 beginning July 1, but these licenses cannot be issued until that date and applications will not be available until about June 15, according to Game Commission Executive Director'Chester F. Phelps. More than 15,000 Virginians are expected to become eligible as a result of the General Assembly’s lowering the qualifying age from 70 to 65. The amended law conveys to 65 year olds the privilege of fishing throughout the state without a license, so delay in obtaining the document should not be any bar to fishermen taking advantage of the law’s new provisions. However, it is encumbent upon each individual to be able to show proof of age if asked.
THE LIFETME license serves mainly as a means of identification for the anglers among the state’s senior citizens, but it does convey hunting and trapping privileges to which a 65 year old is not otherwise entitled.
Applications for the senior citizens’ license may be picked up at most hunting and fishing license agencies, or obtained from the Game Commission’s Richmond Office, Fiscal Division, P. O. Box 11104, Richmond 23230. All of the lifetime licenses are laminated and may be obtained by mail from the Richmond office.□
