His educational career was interrupted during World War II while he served with the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1946.
A native of Deltaville, Va., Norton attended public schools there and in Huntington, West Virginia. He received the BA Degree in science from Marshall University, the Masters in Education from the University of Virginia and completed additional graduate work at Duke.
WHEN NORTON joined the Warren and Rappahannock System, public school enrollment in Warren was less- than 2,400 pupils. The enrollment during the past year exceeded 4,000. Rappahannock County has witnessed the consolidation of seven smaller and older elementary schools into one modern facility since 1967.
In announcing his retirement Norton expressed appreciation for having the opportunity to work with the people of the two counties. He stated that he had been privileged to work with two fine school boards and had enjoyed the co-operation that had existed between the administration and the total staff of both counties.
