RAPPAHANNOCK League for Environmental Protection president Phil Irwin asked the planners to look into the possible “Wilderness” designation for parts of the Shenandoah National Park. If the Park is included in the national wilderness system, it will be up to park superintendent Bob Jacobsen to decide how the wilderness areas are administered, Irwin said.
Irwin said he understands that “Wilderness” might mean that some parts of the Park will be closed to visitors entering from the trails at the foot of the mountain. Visitors will only be admitted into Wilderness areas from “the top down,” Irwin said. Trails in the Wilderness . area will be allowed to grow up, Irwin said.
Jin) White, from the District Planning Commission staff, said Madison County is “gravely concerned” about the Wilderness designation. Madison is particularly concerned that “uncontrolled burning” might be allowed in the park, White said.
Phil Irwin had heard that this might happen, too. He and White said there is a new philosophy within the Interior Department to allow a fire which starts naturally to burn itself out without being put out by the Forest Service. Irwin said he understood that Congressman Kenneth Robinson is supporting the Wilderness Bill for the park.
