would require four extra classrooms, four more teachers, plus extra school buses. “But the school board is worried about us getting into an unaccredited situation, if we don’t have the Kindergarten,” Luke said.
Bobby Carter, a member of the audience, said he thought the kindergartens would be “dead expense to the county.” The Supervisors nodded that they agreed.
Luke said the Virginia Association of Counties has lobbied against state-mandated programs arguing that unless the state has the funds to finance the programs, they shouldn’t expect the counties to implement them. Luke said he didn’t know what had come of that effort.
LUKE ALSO suggested that the school board be asked to come in with a “priority list” when they present their budget. That would help the Supervisors decide what should be cut and what shouldn’t.
Mrs. Aide Holman of Amissville wanted to ask the Supervisors about conditions on the school buses. Luke told her that the Supervisors had no jurisdiction over the school board, except on budget matters. Mrs. Holman also wondered if the schools were filled to capacity.
They must be, Luke thought, if the kindergarten would mean four new classrooms. But here again, questions like that could only be answered by the school board, Luke told her.D
